PERFORMER DETAILS (FRIDAY)
Joslyn & the Sweet Compression (Friday, 6:00-7:00 PM)After growing up singing in the church choir, and cultivating her dynamic voice and performance skills in cover bands and stage plays, Joslyn Hampton teamed with her stepfather, Marty Charters (a touring guitarist and songwriter who has shared the stage with legends such as Junior Wells and Van Morrison), to compose a captivating set of tunes and assemble an ace band. Joslyn & The Sweet Compression (including Steve Holloman – keyboards, Smith Donaldson – bass, Rashawn Fleming – drums, Trevin Little – saxophone, and Chase Fleming – trombone and trumpet ) combine to deliver a hook-filled mix of funk and soul on their self-titled debut album, released in 2019.
Bajah One (Friday, 7:30-8:45 PM)
Bajah is a huge pop star in his home country of Sierra Leone. Known as “The voice of the voiceless” – he raps and sings about peace and reconciliation and speaks for the people’s needs, given the harsh civil war that ravaged Sierra Leone for 11 years. Since Bajah has come to the U.S., he and his band have garnered the full support of The Roots. He has played The Roots Picnic multiple years and they have opened for The Roots dozens of times and have ?uestlove and James Poyser on production for the upcoming album, which also features Talib Kweli, K’naan, Res and the Fyre Dept.
Toubab Krewe (Friday, 9:15-10:45 PM)
Regional favorites for many years, Toubab Krewe kicks off our return to the 5PTS Outdoors series, this time on Maple Ave. This vibrant Asheville, NC-based instrumental powerhouse, creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock, African traditions, jam sensibilities, international folk strains and more. Formed in 2005, Toubab Krewe has tenaciously honed their craft through relentless touring and a fierce dedication to carving out something they can truly call their own. This is a band that actively draws inspiration from whatever source floats into their purview, something they’ve exhibited in their decade and a half of heavy gigging.
lespecial (Friday, 11:00 PM-12:45 AM — After Party INSIDE)
lespecial made their debut on the 5PTS stage this fall and they rocked the house. lespecial carve their own sonic path in modern music, creating their signature blend of “heavy future groove”. The power trio’s fresh synthesis of varied and divergent influences doesn’t underestimate the listener, reflecting a post-modern cultural climate in which fans have space on their aural palette for J Dilla, Radiohead, King Crimson and Fela Kuti. Veering from hip-hop to metal, prog to house, pensive indie-rock to apocalyptic dub, leaving room for head banging and hip swaying alike, while still presenting a unified sound and vision.
