5 Points Outdoors hops on the Road to FloydFest on Friday, May 21, with the triple threat of Travers Brothership with special guest, Abby Bryant & the Echoes, and Pressing Strings. on Saturday, May 22, with powerhouses The Hackensack Boys, Chupacabras, and Jacob Doss. Join us at Wasena Park for an unforgettable evening of live music with our old and new friends. The Avocado Food Truck will be on site all weekend serving up delicious, fresh-made food for all. Gates open at 5:00pm (Music starts approximately 30 minutes after gates open.) Get there early to take advantage of the 5 Points Power Hour, with $5 Bell’s Brewery drafts from 5:00-6:00pm.

Friday, May 21: Travers Brothership ~ Abby Bryant & The Echoes, Pressing Strings

Songwriters. Singers. Multi-instrumentalists. Brothers. At only 26, twins Eric Travers and Kyle Travers have been writing songs and stunning live audiences for well over half their lifetime. Presenting soulful, bluesy, rock n’ roll spun in psychedelic jam, Travers Brothership; also including singer, bassist, songwriter, Josh Clark, and keyboardist, songwriter, percussionist, Ian McIsaac, create a fierce and balanced team, strengthened by the 13 years they’ve spent together on and off the road.
The band first met in 2007 on a school bus in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. Soon after the Travers twins were invited by Josh and Ian to get off at their bus stop for a jam in Josh’s garage, little did they know this was history in the making. After numerous jams and a few lessons from Eric and Kyle’s father (and veteran touring musician) “Hurricane” Bob Travers, Travers Brothership was formed in 2012.

Abby Bryant & The Echoes

Built around a powerful voice and hard-driving rock ‘n’ soul rhythm section, Asheville, NC’s Abby Bryant & The Echoes has secured a fast-growing foothold in the Southeast music scene. Founded by Abby Bryant (vocals, keys) and Bailey Faulkner (guitar), the two formed the band out of distinctly different musical upbringings. 
Bryant formed her musical intuition at home and church where she began singing at only five years old under the direction of her music minister father. Hailing from the same hometown, Faulkner developed his musical foundation throughout his youth from his parent’s love of The Beatles and guitar-driven classic rock staples. With Bryant’s ear and voice trained on gospel and hymns and a spiritual connection to music, Bryant set the stage for her future career in music.
Listeners will find it hard not to hear similarities to some of the artists that inspire the two including currently touring acts Tedeschi Trucks Band, Grace Potter, and Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds. At the same time, one cannot deny that even with Abby Bryant & The Echoes’ youthfulness, the band connects to the roots of the music in the members’ hearts. Looking to artists like Etta James, Sam and Dave, and the integral Muscle Shoals sound to light the way, Abby Bryant & The Echoes carries its own soul-shining torch into today. 

Pressing Strings

What’s in a band name? A little or a lot, depending on how deeply you want to go.
For Annapolis, Maryland-based trio Pressing Strings (Jordan Sokel: Guitar/Vocals, Nick Welker: Bass, Brandon Bartlett: Drums), the guitar guy is outnumbered by the rhythm section, but it all started back when Sokel, as a kid enamored with Dylan, Marley, Strummer, Simon, and Withers, learned to simultaneously play guitar and sing his favorite songs.
Then, guitar in hand, the songwriting bug took hold.  
Cutting to 2014, with the current line-up firmed up, the band got to work developing its fanbase in the mid-Atlantic with shows from Pennsylvania to the Carolinas, then headed into the studio to record its Owe The Source album, released in 2015. Not easily tagged, genre-wise, the album deftly mixed a thoughtful soulfulness with union hall rock and roll, and they returned to the road to show it all off everywhere from VFWs to festivals.

Saturday, May 22: Hackensaw Boys ~ Chupacabras

For almost two decades, the Hackensaw Boys have plowed the asphalt bringing their raw, gritty American vernacular sounds to the music halls and streets across the world. Twenty years later, the group continues their burning hot vision of American roots music into a new age, fueled as much by a rowdy punk spirit as by the traditional masters that first inspired them.

The music began in 1999 when four friends from Virginia’s beautiful Shenandoah Valley found their collective ways to the roots music hub of Charlottesville. They didn’t waste time getting going, playing a show on the street the day of their first practice. The group let the good times roll and started adding like-minded people until their ranks reached twelve players for their first US tour. As with the folk and punk traditions which form the foundation of their sound, they’ve always operated more as a collective than a band.

 

Chupacabras

Transcending time and space, we welcome you to the other side of reality. Journey with us on this distinct experience. Weaving old-school surf rock with funk and ruminations of psychedelic flavors. One night with Chupacabras is enough to ignite dancers to delight, releasing young and old on a transformative exotic trajectory. A seven-piece band of brothers, Chupacabras peppers Afro-Cuban beats with jazz, rock and a captivating stage presence, inspiring audiences to move, love and live like never before. You’ll be glad you came!

Parking is plentiful, nearby the entrance gate, and easy to find. Check out the available FREE parking options on our convenient parking map (see left).

Get the lay of the land with the pod locations so you can lock in the seat of your choice. The GA area is first come, first served, so get there at 5:00pm to get the best GA spot. Check out the site map with labeled pods (see right). Everyone is welcome to bring blankets and camp chairs, but coolers and outside food is not permitted. Please, no popup tents that will block the view shed.

Jill ~ I love 5 Points Outdoors because there are so many fun activities and places to eat around the Greenway. There’s Mr. Smiley who fixes bikes and sells affordable used ones, R&D Coffee Shop, The Lady Tattooers at Electric Eye Tattoo, convenient river access, the climbing gym and my favorite restaurants: Tacos Rojas, Bloom, and The Green Goat. I recommend the actual Rojas Tacos; they are insane.  

Kellee ~ No trip to Roanoke is of any merit without an afternoon drive on the Blue Ridge Parkway and a visit to the Roanoke Star, overlooking the greater Roanoke Valley. Hot summer days in the city become cool breezes in the mountains. Be sure to stop at the many overlooks along the way to take in the breathtaking vistas of SW VA.

Will ~ My favorite thing about Roanoke is that we are in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I love all of the local and organically sourced food options around town. We have such a great music scene too, especially at 5 Points. When I’m not driving around town in my 71 VW Bus, you can definitely catch me around Wasena on the Greenway, hammocking with my dog, Daisy.
